Daphne Bagshawe, Chairman of Sussex Weald Conservatives, has sent her congratulations to Nus Ghani who's been elected MP to the new Sussex Weald Constituency.
Most of her electors will know Nus because the seat encompasses much of her former area of Wealden where she was first elected in 2015.
Writing to members, Mrs Bagshawe said:
Well, the election is over and sadly the polls have been proved correct. This is a devastating result for our Party.
Rishi Sunak said that the election was about the future and he was right. We now have to prepare ourselves for that future and help to rebuild a Conservative Party that can oppose effectively when necessary, and return to Government at the earliest opportunity. To do that we will need to unite.
We will need to re-establish faith in our Party and in politics generally. We will need to ensure that those who aspire to govern us follow high ethical standards.
We can take some consolation from the fact that our own candidate, Nus Ghani, whom I have been proud to support, has been returned as the Conservative MP for Sussex Weald.
I will do all in my power to help her in the part she will play in the new Parliament. I thank all of you for your support.
The future will not be easy but rebuilding the Party will be worth the effort.
Speaking as the result was announced at the Wealden council offices in Hailsham, Nus said:
"It has been a challenging night/morning, but I am very pleased to be returned as MP for Sussex Weald. Our country has demanded change and it will be up to a new government to deliver it.We have no divine right to power and we, quite frankly, took too much and too many for granted. Sleep first and then some humility as the post-mortem begins."
